Custom Kitchen Example

This is an example of what a custom kitchen looks like. Many companies these days use 'modular' or pre-built factor cabinets because they are much cheaper for the builder to buy and install. Why? Simply because they are nothing more than manufactured boxes which allow their installers to simply screw them to the wall and not require the extra step and expense of having a finisher then come and stain or paint them.

Modular cabinetry are built in a factory under perfect manufacturing conditions. However, most who have them will tell you the single biggest problem is if you scuff or nick the wood, especially in highly visible areas, it's nearly impossible to repair or match. Not only are custom cabinetry painted or stained on site, allowing for easy touch-ups should anything happen, they are also built specifically to your home and appliance specs, rather than the other way around as is the case with modular cabinetry. To the trained eye, because modular kitchens are put together pre-finished, you will many times see the spacing between the boxes which the installers have no way of filling or fixing due to the lack of a professional finisher.

A great way to see this is to go to a new model home. All tract homes use modular kitchen cabinetry. Because new homes are designed with that in mind, they get a perfect fit from wall to wall because the home's kitchen area is designed around the cabinetry's specs. Then go view if you can a modular kitchen remodel. You'll quickly see the difference.
